With gas prices through the roof I'm gonna be doing most of my fishing very close to home this year. Luckily for me there's about 150 different bodies of water within 20 minutes of the house here. To make things a little more interesting I've "challenged" myself to see how many different pits I can catch a keeper fish out of in the Greene-Sullivan State Forest. Not sure if this will be just in 2012 or if I'll just keep it going after this year. With over 120 pits in the forest I'm pretty sure I won't get to all of them this year. I'm doing this for fun and also for some fact finding. I haven't fished half the pits in the forest and maybe this will get me to try some new spots and maybe find a new honey hole. If anyone would like to join in feel free to do so! *UPDATE* - I've now decided to include all of the public waters in the Greene-Sullivan area, not just those found in the forest.

Haha, this list could take awhile. If I lived closer, I'd be there to explore

I think there is a new bait store about a mile from Dirty Harrys. It is back towards Likton. It is at teh stop sign east of Dirty Harrys. I saw it last week when I was down there.

The Old Trading Post, I believe. He had only been open a week when I was in there. He didn't have a lot of stock, but said he would be adding things. The coolest thing was the live bait vending machine out front.

Do any of those pits have flatheads in them ? I don't ever remember if any of the pits down there have them.
Also do you ever fish the river down in Greene County ? Any decent fishing there ?
Thanks

I've never heard of any flatties coming out of those pits but that doesn't mean there aren't any in there. I used to fish the White/Eel at Worthington all the time. Now I'm lucky to even make it over there to see my parents. The best place to fish it is right at the confluence of the Eel and White. You used to be able to drive back there but it was fenced off a few years ago. Only accessible by boat now. Which there is a ramp right there by the bridge on 157 heading towards Bloomfield. I was talking to my sister a couple weeks and she mentioned something about taking a boat ride up the Eel and I heard a voice in the background say "No we aren't; too low".

Went to Bass Lake for the first time today. Man was it hot! We caught about 20 fish, mostly bass. 3 keeper bass and 2 huge crappie. Most of the bass were caught on top water until about 10:00 AM.
No muskie though. I guess that will be another trip..... I'll be back!

There's no way a musky could be caught and safely released in this crazy heat. I was thinking the exact same thing Troy! The only way I know of would be to leave the muskie in the water and try to extract the hook without removing the fish from the water. Brian - I believe this challenge is something that will continue for many years since there over a hundred different pits to fish

I look forward to helping you add to your list this year. I know you need to add Island, Bass, Box of Chocolates and Front Lake (Hillenbrand) to the list. Only about a hundred and fifteen to go. I wish I would've started this challenge several years ago. I've probably got at least 25 under my belt

I don't think I'll include the Minnehaha and Hillenbrand pits.....we'll leave that to another challenge!

I'm looking forward to trout opener and getting back out on Canvasback. I really liked that lake plus I have some new bass lures to try out. Just wish Canvas wasn't electric only.

Let us know if you manage to fish each pit and what pits have fish and which have none, which pits have good fish and what type of fish and which were not so good. There's a couple FWA areas up in the northern part of the state that needs to be done like this too.
