My dad and me went over to Sullivan today to see if we could hookup with one of them elusive saugeye. I started out casting a G&G mini chub tipped with half a gulp leech. I was getting some nibbles, but they wouldn't suck it in. Finally I let it take it a little and set the hook....and it pulled the leech off. I cast right back without putting another leech on the mini chub and it was fish on! I was pretty excited until I seen this little guy surface.... We tried various spinners, jigs, and crankbaits with no luck. I ended up with one of Sullivan's famous dink crappie on a mini chub and finished the day with another dink bass on a char rattle trap. Water temp was 60-62. At least it was a beautiful day!

Have you decided not to deer hunt this year? Haven't decided yet. I did get my bow out and tried shooting the other day. Couldn't hit crap. Was having trouble seeing the target. Guess it's time for another trip to the optometrist.

Guess it's time for another trip to the optometrist. LOL! I've been there! Several years ago I tried hunting without my glasses because I felt the deer were picking me out due to the glare and flash my glasses would give off I still think this is a bit of an issue at times but I have no choice. I discovered while trying to hunt w/o them I couldn't see crap over 100 yds away and I couldn't focus when shooting at things near me. I can't stand dealing with contacts so I am stuck hunting with my lenses on and hoping for the best

Have you ever tried any shallow cranks or stick baits for those saugeye? This time of year I would concentrate on the weed edges around and inside of turns in the contour or drop offs. What kind of forage is in Sullivan? Are there a lot of baitfish or young of the year panfish? I think it's very important to match the hatch. #5 shallow shadraps work really good for me up hear on eyes. The smaller Rick Clunn cranks that Wal-Sucks has have been pretty good too. Oh ya, low light conditions are your best bet for fishing shallow. I would also concentrate on wind blown shores or weed lines especially if it's been blowing the same way for awhile. Boat control might stink during the wind, but the wind can be your best friend at times.

My cousin was on them pretty good a few years ago using hand painted green rat-l-traps. I know reelmn from IW has done good there using leeches and whistler jigs. The main forage is gizzard shad and billions of little white crappie. The water is usually stained and there's not a lot of weeds. We were trying the wind blown shore the other day, but like you said, the boat control was not fun.

Here's another tactic that works for me up here. Take your ice fishing sonar (sorry, forget which one you have) and use that over the side of your boat. I usually wrap my transducer cord a few times around a boat oar to keep it stationary in the water. My friends use a wood slat with a notch in the end to hang there transducer. They hold the slat on the boat with a small c-clamp. Since the water is stained I would use a chartreuse #5 jiggin rap. I like to use a short ultra light rod when doing this. I prefer rods under 5 foot when doing this. Open water ice fishin at it's best! When you use this tactic wind is your enemy lol. I would concentrate on some deeper water around any kind of contour changes.
