Well, with my hours being slashed again at work and these crazy gas prices...we're not doing much for spring break and will be doing most of our fishing close to home this year. Luckily for us, Hillenbrand Fish and Wildlife Area is only a couple miles from the house.
Colton and me broke out the ultralights and decided to try and catch a few crappie this evening at one of the closest pits. I was casting a white Northland Thumper Crappie King jig and Colt started with a blue and white jig. Colt caught a few little bass and I was getting a bunch of bites with no hook ups before I finally landed a decent gill. It felt like the fish were just biting the tail, so I decided to tie on a little 1/32 oz rooster tail. First cast I landed another decent gill so Colt decided to try one too and then the fun began!
On one of his first few casts Colt caught this one...
Here's me saying "I had no idea there were 'gills this nice in this little pit!"
Caught this dandy redear in about the same spot....in only about 2-3' water.
Colt with another of his dandies....
We ended up keeping 18 to fry up with some fresh mushrooms.
We probably caught a dozen dink bass and threw back probably another half dozen keeper gills and redear. Not one crappie was caught. We might try a different pit tomorrow and try for some of those again.
The toms were gobbling the whole time we were out there and we saw a female bald eagle on the short drive home. We had the lake to ourselves other than a family that stopped and fished for a while.
