Took my new "fishing combo" of utv/kayak out for the first time together yesterday evening. Went down the road to Hillenbrand FWA and fished Horseshoe Lake so that I could mark another pit off my " Greene-Sullivan Challenge" list. I had fished there before, but I couldn't find where I'd ever made a report about this lake. It didn't take long to get my first keeper as there were bluegill spawning not far from the ramp. What bluegill I saw and caught were smaller than what's normally found in the pits, but you could have got a filet off them. I was on more of a recon mission than looking for meat, so I switched to bass fishing and that pretty much sucked. This is another pit that is FULL of dink bass. This lake has a lot of weeds which makes it hard to get around the entire "horseshoe" during summer months. The new "combo"...

Do you think the gills are spawning for the first or second wave? I never saw where they were fully on the beds at West Island, but it's been a few weeks since I've been down there.

I'm guessing more like 3rd or 4th wave. They're spawning again at the pond too and I believe it's the 4th time, or heck, might even be the 5th(bluegill twice, then redear, and now bluegill once or twice.) First time was early this year; in late April.

I guess I didn't start looking early enough. I may have to take a lap around the pit next weekend to see what's up.

I think that most of the pits down there either need smaller limit sizes on the bass or need some flathead catfish to eat the smaller fish. Maybe the bass would get bigger. Doesn't the balaclava make you even hotter? I've seen pros wear them on really sunny and windy days but I can't help but think I would get too hot.

I have a neck gaiter similar to Greenedog's and I don't know that it warms me up any. I'm sure it does a bit, but the material of mine is pretty breathable.

You are making me anxious to get down there and check a few places off the list

The one I have isn't a balaclava or neck gaiter; it's a "Buff" knockoff like you see them wear on Survivor. It's made out of a "microfiber" that's really thin and breathable. I put it on the other day because it felt like the sun was burning a hole in the back of my neck and it did help. I was also dipping it in the pit to cool it off once in a while.
