I was doing some research on German shorthaired pointers the other day and came across an ad on gundogbreeders.com that said "Free Bird Dogs" and was from a place in Shelbyville. Here's the ad...Shotgun Farm has rescue bird dogs who need a home. Various skill levels, various breeds. Some registered, some not registered. To have one of these amazing dogs, all you need to do is convince us you will provide a good loving, attentive home. These are beautiful dogs with loving natures who want to hunt.
I got pretty excited, but was a little leery; (thought it might be "free dog," but $2000 for the training.) I sent them an email and was invited to call and schedule a time to come meet their gang. I called and had a nice chat with the owner and it was totally legit. They even had a female GSP that hunts up for adoption. One of the catches was that the dog must go to a better place than where they are at now, and these dogs have it pretty good where they are! The ones that don't live in the house live in a heated and air-conditioned kennel and have a 2 acre fenced area to run.
I think the only way I could give them a better place would be to make the dog a permanent member of our household. I was supposed to be meeting my new companion right this minute over in Shelbyville, but after thinking about it and trying to discuss it with Kim, I contacted them again last night and told them I wouldn't be coming. Just wouldn't be fair to ol' Max, he deserves to live out his days in peace.
Anyhow, I'm posting this in case anyone else is looking for a new family member that hunts. Right now they have a few dogs looking for a good home....an English setter, wirehaired pointer, and GSP. The GSP is a rambunctious female who hunts, but may need some discipline training and needs housebroke. She is registered, not sure about the others.
These are dogs that have been taken in because their owners could no longer care for them for various reasons.
Some of what is required of you;
Like I said, the dog must be going to a BETTER situation than what they already have.
Must be your #1 or at least #2 dog.
Must agree to not sale or give away the dog, if it doesn't work out, they want it back.
Here's their website if anyone is interested; www.shotgunfarm.com/
I spoke with Dick on the phone and he seems like a super nice guy and is definitely a dog lover. Their dog training business is their life, 7 days a week. If I ever decide to get a pup, I'll probably be sending it their way.
