Got out over the weekend with my friend Dave and he put us on some sand pike that were stacked up. Just not real aggressive. Put about 40 in the boat that were legal size, just not keepers. It was a great day to be on the river.

What is the difference between an sand pike and a saugeye(sp) and how big do they have to be to keep. I would love to get my hands on some of them to use as live bait for muskies.

hoosierhunter I dont think you can use them for bait because they are a sport fish.. And i just call em sauger instead of sand pike.

I thought bluegills were considerd a sport fish as well and alot of people use them for bait? Just wondering becasue I would love to be able to be able to find some decent live bait. Do you catch them in lakes or rivers, not looking for a spot just a direction.

hoosierhunter I dont think you can use them for bait because they are a sport fish.. And i just call em sauger instead of sand pike. Legally caught fish that are legal size can be used for bait. We've used largemouth, bluegill, and channel cats for muskie bait. I wouldn't think sauger would be that great for bait as I don't think they're that "hardy." Plus they're too good of eatin' for that! hh- Dirty Harry's in the forest did have live suckers. Not sure of the size or prices. Congrats on the catches, Bodeen! I'd love to get down there for those someday.

I want to say the suckers were somewhere in the $10-$14 a pound range.
Does Dirty Harry's stay open through the winter?

I got some a while back at hand crafted lures but they were way to small. I don't know where dirty harrys is.
