If the water temp is 80 or higher, it's too hot to musky fish.I'm not trying to bash anyone out there, just think of this as a public service announcement. We posted a video 2 or 3 years ago of Chase catching a muskie and we mentioned in the video that the water temp was 83. We caught a lot of flack for that video from muskie fisherman. We didn't realize at the time that you can't catch those big cold water fish in that warm of water and safely release them. Even if it seems to swim off healthy....chances are high that it will be dead within 2 hours to 2 days. An article on the subject.... www.startribune.com/sports/outdoors/blogs/98616524.htmlAn excerpt from one of the many emails we received on the subject... I have been musky fishing for over 15 years. in my experience, releasing hundreds of muskies, Musky Fishing when the water is 80 degrees or warmer is NOT safe for the muskies. it's not safe. High water temps result in lower oxygen in the water and excessive lactic acid in the muscles. Delay Mortality for released muskies is MUCH MUCH higher when the water temps are that high. You might want to switch to a different species during the hot months.

What makes 80 the magic number? Seems to me that if 80 is too high than 79 and 78 and so on would also be dangerous to them. By that logic, you should only muskie fish in fairly cool water. I've never fished for muskie, just giving my opinion on the subject.

My logic, but I know very little about musky.

I've never fished for muskie, just giving my opinion on the subject. So......going by your logic, if I had said 77 you would have asked "what about 75 or 76?" I too was giving my opinion and from reading tons of info on the subject, my opinion is that fishing in water over 80 degrees is dangerous to the fish. The warmer the water....the less oxygen in the water. 80 is just an easier number to remember. I'm sure that 78 or 79 are just as dangerous. There's no "magic" here, it's science. There's just too many stories out there of dead fish that I can't help but believe the evidence. So....yes, "you should only muskie fish in fairly cool water." Also, I'm talking about lakes and pits here. Rivers and streams would have higher oxygen levels in the moving water. I'm not gonna bash anyone who's out doing it....as long as they are gonna eat the fish. The same thing goes for striped bass fishing in hot weather. The big stripers can't be safely released in hot weather either. This is all my opinion!
