Well I recently purchased a very nice non issued Mosin Nagant 1946r M44 with the attached bayonet. I know a lot of people have these so I was wondering who else has them and what they think of them. Ammo is around the same price as .223 but a much bigger round. You can get surplus ammo for dirt cheap but most is corrosive and I just prefer not to shoot it.

I enjoyed my time with my M44 before I decided to sporterize it. put a monte carlo style stock and a scope on it. Still shoots ok but I wish I would have left it with the original stock and stuff.
Nowhere near as accurate as my Savage rifle but still fun to shoot every once in a while. Not a terrible kick to them, but I'm usually done shooting it after about 10 rounds.
I have shot a lot of corrosive ammo out of mine and never had a problem with rust or other barrel issues. Just got to run a few patches with an ammonia based window cleaner on them down the barrel before you do your usual cleaning. Or you can make some home made bore cleaner using automatic transmission fluid and that takes care of any corrosive salts left over from shooting surplus ammo. Let me know if you want more info on that. Its also a ton cheaper than buying Hoppes cleaner all the time.
Overall, I liked my M44 at first, but have been trying to sell it for a while now.
My buddy bought a Mosin Nagant full length rifle at the same time I bought mine. He kept it original, got a scope from that era for it, and had the bolt bent to accommodate the scope. That gun shoots brilliantly. I definitely made the wrong choice with mine.

I had the full length 1943 mosin nagant 91/30. They are fun and cheap to shoot. Just be careful of what your shooting and where, most of the ammo I found is steel core and will tick off the owners of shooting ranges if they have metal targets. I sporterized mine as well. The ammo being corrosive, I used windex to clean the bore as well, it neutralizes the salts and sulfur that cause rust but you still should clean it throughly every now and again. I moved up to a Rem 700 but still liked the mosin. By the way, can anyone agree on how to pronounce the stinking name...mosin nagant.
