My suggestion for a shotgun is the Weatherby PA-459. Its a 12GA pump action that shoots 3 inch shells. It was designed as a home defense shotgun and retails for $499. My gunshop usually gets me guns for about $150 cheaper than retail price.

Benelli Nova tactical(slug barrel)= $400
as for a handgun, you couldnt go wrong with Kimber, GLock, Sig, or Bretta

With you being from Indy I would make the drive down to Camby and check out Bradis Guns. When I was in there back in December they had plenty-o-shotguns and some at good prices. They even had a couple Mossberg Persuadors for around $200-$225. Now grant it that was 6 months ago. Shop around for sure though. The less you spend on a HD shotgun will open up more opportunities on getting a good pistol. From my past experiences you can get good shotguns for cheap but you can't get good pistols for cheap (unless you do find that good deal). This is also my opinion about how I feel when firearm shopping.

I agree with Spainy. A low priced shotgun is going to generally be reliable and get the job done. Especially a pump action. The same is definitely not true fo a pistol. The last thing you want to do is buy a cheap pistol and have it jam or fail when you need it the most. Nothing wrong with a used shotgun either. Definitely spend as much of your budget as you can on the pistol.

As long as it functions and is sound any shotgun will be good. I prefer Remington or Mossberg. As for handgun I prefer glocks. They are very reliable, fairly cheap and function during extreme conditions.
