On Monday, the day before i went back to school, i took my kayak and a couple fly rods downstream from the williams dam and figured id fish for 2 or 3 hours and caught a few bass. First i hooked into my first drum on a fly and it wasnt that big but put up a nice fight. Then i casted next to a tree that was fallen in the water, and caught my first channel cat on a flyrod! THen i made my way down to the covered bridge and fished around there from a small island ,and i made a couple casts and hooked into a small sauger...my first one on a flyrod! By this point i have no idea what i might catch next..LOL I fished around the island for maybe an hour and caught maybe two or three 8-12" smallies and a few 10" largemouth.
I moved down to the new 450 bridge and fished around the beams or whatever you call them. I casted about 20 feet ahead of the beams in the water and let it drift and sink to the bridge and then bounced it on the bottom and almost everytime a fish would grab it. I ended up catching about 10 largemouth there and another drum. Two of the bass were 1 1/2- 2 lbs and about 14".
Moved on down the river to a shallower section and found a spot in the middle of the river where a log laying on the bottom was making a riffle behind it and i figured a bass might be hanging behind it ,threw my fly in there let itdrift thru the riffle and bam! Another nice little cat hit it and i fought it for about 5 minutes. It was fun but i was kind of disappointed because i thought i had a monster bass. Then i went around the bend and it jgot alot deeper and had a rocky shoreline where i caught a few smallies about 6-10". I also caught another bigger perch near the shore there..
I went a few hundred yards and found an area where the water was only about knee deep and there were some mini rapids. I got out and fished from shore around there and caught ANOTHER nice catfish, about 18-20" and it took awhile to get it in.. I also caught two 12" smallies in the "rapids" and about a 5" dink largemouth. Then i fished above the rapids and caught four or five more large and smallmouth bass, the last fish i caught was a largemouth and it was probably 2 lbs and 15". It was a really fun fishing trip. I lost track of time and when i looked at my phone it was 8 PM and i hauled butt back to the ramp! I also got rained on to make it even better, what are the odds, right?
I was using a 5wt fly rod floating line, 6lb leader with a size 6 black, beadhead woolly bugger that i tied myself. And i caught all fish on the same fly. I will try to put some pics up of some of the fish and the fly i was using.
