We have had lots of rain this past week which is normally good for mushroom season. However, my mushroom spots sit right along a river and the river is way over it’s bank. As a matter of fact, my best spot isn’t even accessible because the road to get to it is about 3’ underwater! So, I talked to a farmer I know about hunting mushrooms in his woods since mine are flooded. He gave me the go ahead so I immediately headed to the spot. I’ve never hunted mushrooms at this property before and I was optimistic and excited. To get back to the woods there is a long lane that runs alongside a creek. I drove back the lane as far as I could before it started getting too soft and hopped out and started looking along the ditch for shrooms. I got about 50 yards from the truck and decided I wasn’t going to find anything there so I picked up the pace and quickly started heading to the woods. About 10 steps later I take a look to me left and there in all it’s glory stood a beautiful morel...and another...and holy cow a bunch!
At this point I thought I was gonna find a bunch. Unfortunately, that one cluster is all I could muster.
I ended up cooking them in a way I really like. I rolled them in seasoned flour and skillet fried them in a butter and Worcestershire sauce combination. They were really good. The only downfall is the Worcestershire does diminish the flavor of the mushroom itself. I would highly suggest this method if you want to try them in a slightly different way. Along with them I grilled some seasoned shark steaks and ahi tuna with a side of baked asparagus. A great meal all around...
