I guess it all depends on the trees, but in all the years I have been hunting with my grandma we've found less than 20 blacks in the spots we hunt. I guess it could be that we don't look early enough, but we only find them in one spot on a hillside and the most we found was twelve one year. Ever since then it has been one or two, but not every year. Kind of a bummer, because I like to eat them as they have a slightly different flavor than the grey/yellow morels.
Good to see your folks made it back up here safely and they are making the transition from slab crappie to morels.

When I was little my grandma, who lived on a farm in southern Clay County, had a woods by her house that produced mess after mess of black morels every year. Several different people hunted that woods and we all picked them there. We were just talking about that woods this winter and wondering if it is still producing. I'll never forget the excitement of going there for the first mushrooms of the season every year. I think that's why they are my favorite, that plus they do have a slightly different taste. I call it a more "mushroomy" flavor. LOL. It's a tradition with me that the first black morel I find for that year I put it up to my nose and inhale that mushroom smell!

I never did really understand what made the black morels grow in that little woods either...it was mostly maple trees. There was a few pines in one corner where you would occasionally find a few grays.

Nobote from IA kind of gave me the science behind it, but they tend to fruit off of different trees/plants than the yellow morels. I think they also fruit at lower temperatures as well.

I stopped by mom and dad's yesterday and they showed me a mess of nice black ones they had in the fridge and then a few minutes later Monty texts me this pic of yellows he's finding. I go to Shakamak and do a bunch of walking only to find 1 peckerhead! Gail and me looked again today and came up empty. Like I said before...moving from Greene to Owen County has messed up my mushroom mojo!!!

I'm with you. Troy! I used to find more in my neighborhood before all the houses were built up than I can now. I have seen all kinds of reports of morels in Morgan County so I spent 3 hours looking near Martinsville today and NADA!!! I have lost all my confidence in my ability to find a fungus.

Well, Monty and Sam found 156 and they're bringing some to Easter dinner, so I guess I don't hate him anymore!
