My brother, Monty, and me have hunted HARD this spring. This was day 11 for me, and day 5 for Monty chasing long beards. We've been out there rain or shine and have seen tons of birds, they just would not cooperate; hanging up just out of range or completely ignoring decoys and calls all together. Yesterday we had a dozen birds in the field right in front of us and at least 5 were gobblers. We watched these birds for 2 hours and they stayed just of range the whole time. This is Monty's first season turkey hunting and I thought he had given up after all the frustration we've had. But, as he was leaving yesterday, he said "If you don't hear from me tonight, I'll be here in the morning". This morning we setup with the ground blind in a different part of the field. Monty had been trying for a bow kill, but the gloves were off now, scatter gun time! We had birds gobbling off the roost a couple hundred yards off to our left and were able to call them in, but it was the same old story; they hung up at around a 100 yards. After much strutting and gobbling, a pretty lady came by and took the boys away. Those were a couple nice toms. Not long after they leave, Monty sees birds to our right. It looks like 2 more toms. They come feeding along the field edge and it's finally time to throw some lead! We had talked about how to handle the shooting before, it would be 1-2-SHOOT, well, I count off 1-2 and at 2 I squeeze!(Sorry! ) Monty shot half a second later, but his bird had jumped and he missed, he was able shoot again and got it on the second shot. The footage isn't that great because all you could see were a couple heads peeking over the mustard weed, we actually had to watch it a couple times to even see the head I was shooting at. A couple weeks ago I might have been embarrassed over these birds, but right now you've never seen 2 more happier guys over a couple little jakes.

Congrats Troy! I have been there before. This late in the season those jakes look like they have 12 inch beards and weigh 30lbs dont they! Did you happen to get it on film?

Would have been nice if we could have doubled up on the two toms we saw first thing, but like Troy said, we're very happy with these jakes. This was actually the first hunt that we both had a gun. Troy had pretty much sacrificed his season to this point, calling for me and trying to get my first turkey on video. Thanks a million, Troy! This was the last day we had to hunt together, so it worked out pretty good. The season had been one frustration after another, but we finally got a little break. Now it's time to start camping and fishing. Bring it on!
Oh, and Chase, my jake's beard was longer than yours (until Max got ahold of it! ). Good luck this weekend.

I filmed the hunt, but there's not much "kill" footage. We were setup on a picked cornfield that has turned in to a mustard weed jungle! All you can see in the video is a head peeking up over the weeds, you can't even see both turkeys. I'm just glad that my tag is filled, now it's time for Chase to get one of the big boys!
