 Your best fishing story!
« Thread Started on Oct 21, 2009, 9:19pm »

This is a reply I made to a thread on the indainainfo.net site, but I thought it'd be a good way to start a fishing story thread on here. ;) Here's my story, now let's hear yours!

My best trip of the year so far would have to be my oldest son, Chase, and mines Lake Michigan salmon trip out of Michigan City. After a 4 1/2 hour drive, we arrived in town on the afternoon of Sunday, July 19th. I gave our guide, Captain Kevin Smith, a call to let him know we were in town and to make plans for the following morning and he says "Are you ready to fish?" "Right now?" I ask. "Yep." I knew right then that this was gonna be a good trip. Capt Kevin had a buddy in town with his young son and they wanted to do some perchin', so Chase and I were invited along. We met Capt Kevin at a local pub and after some refreshments we headed to Washington Park Marina. The lake was a little rough that evening with the recreational boaters coming in from the weekend, but we managed to catch a mess of perch for Capt Kevin's buddy. These were the first perch Chase and me had ever caught.

Next morning we were back at the marina at 5:00 am. Capt Kevin introduced us to his good buddy, Kyle Banks, who would be his first mate for the trip. What a difference a night made; the lake was smooth as glass. It was a short ride out to deep water and within minutes Chase had his first salmon, a small king. The fish just kept getting bigger as the morning went on, and ended with my big king. We were done by 11:00 with 11 fish to clean. Chase and me tried to help with the cleaning, but the way Capt Kevin and Kyle were slicing through those filets, we decided to just be the packagers. After a quick lunch, Chase and me visited the Portage Bass Pro, we also wanted to visit Cabelas, but were just to tired to make the short drive over.

The next day was Chase's 15th birthday and surely one he won't forget. We were back at the marina at 5:00 am and on the lake shortly there after. Where the first day was mostly kings and steelhead, day 2 was the coho's turn to play. And man were they fiesty! Chase was somewhat of a "rod hog", but it was his birthday and he was determined to best my king from the day before. He was reeling in coho as fast as he could and it looked like it would be an early limit, but one of us made the mistake of saying this out loud and the fishing gods were listening. The action stopped as quick as it had started. By that time though we had 10 fish in the boat and you couldn't call it anything but a great day. The big fish of day 2 was Chase's lake trout. Both my king and Chase's trout were caught on what Kyle called a "bottom bouncer." It was a sinker about the size of a tennis ball with a winged bobber lure. This rig was tough to reel up off the bottom with nothing on it, you can imagine what it was like with a 15-20lb fish attached! After cleaning day 2's catch, it was time to head back south. We were wore out and Chase slept most of the way home. I made a DVD out of the videos from the trip and sent Capt Kevin and Kyle copies. Capt Kevin called just the other night and we're already making plans for next spring! ;D

I was fishing a 3 in, mimic minnow, bluegill pattern swimbait and i had been catching small bass and huge bluegill. my pole an ulra-lite 5 ft panfish pole. on one cast i thought i had got a snag on a rock or something. then it went air born. when i yellled "big one" no one believed me until it jumped. it was avout a 1-2 minute fight (i wasn't takin any chances) and i landed the 7.5 lb BEAST. theres a pic in the "my 7.5 lb hawg of a largemouth" thread under "bass"

I have two. I was fishing in my uncles friends pond witha light action rod. At this pond, he feeds the fish, so they are monsters. we had been fishing all evening, and my brother and uncle were just slingin em left and right. we were packing up to leave, and I left my bobber about 3 foot from the shore. All of a sudden, my rod started running away. It fell into the water, and I reached in and got it. A big 15 pound cat was on the other end. since my line wasnt far out, I just got him with my hands.

The next day, I was fishing at my uncles pond. I had the same light action rod, and I casted a chicken liver out about 30 yards. After 5 minutes, I got a BIG tug. I picked my rod up and started fighting. I got him about 10 ft from shore, and he broke off. so I retied my hook, put on another liver, and went after him again. I hooked up immediately, and he fought harder this time. I got him right to shore where I could see him, and my line snapped. So now I was really mad, and I tied on another hook, and liver. 10 minutes, a bite. I fought him around two minutes and finnaly got him on shore.

with cats that size, i recommend getting a stronger rod. especially with fish that are fed and are all bigger. it is more of a challenge with light tackle so thats probably more fun when you hook them so easily.

Went to Cagles Mill dam one day right after work, and fished there from about 6PM on through until it got dark.

Must've caught over a limit's worth of nice-sized Crappies, all on RoadRunner jigs cast out into water around 10' deep, counted-down to within a couple feet of the bottom, then reeled-in slow and steady.

Didn't catch one that couldn't have been kept...mostly around 9" or 10" with a couple pushing a foot or so in length. But all were released this time.

Had to be about my most productive Crappie outing in a long time!

The BIG surprise came when I foul-hooked a large Carp, right in the tip of the tail...I'm guessing it had to go15lbs. any way...on my Crappie rod with 4 pound test line!

Had to have taken me at least half an hour to finally wear it out enough to bring it in. Despite the foul-hook, I'm still kinda proud I caught it! My second biggest Carp ever ( out of maybe hundreds? ) when I wasn't even trying to catch one!

Fishing can really surprise you sometimes, you know!

This guy and I were both wore-out...but I was a lot happier!

nice story. I have had good success on panfish with a similar jig to the one you were using. nice carp too.
